Nederlandse productie Myanmar Diaries wint 3 prijzen op Berlinale

Zaterdag werd bekend dat Myanmar Diaries de derde prijs in de Panorama Audience Award competitie in de categorie Panorama Dokumente heeft gewonnen. Dat brengt het totaal aan prijzen op maar liefst drie, een unieke prestatie voor een Nederlandse film op het prestigieuze internationale filmfestival van Berlijn. Eerder werd de documentaire van The Myanmar Film Collective, die geproduceerd is door Corinne Van Egeraat en haar productiebedrijf ZINdoc, al uitgeroepen tot Beste Documentaire van het filmfestival én won het de Amnesty International Award. De documentaire komt nu automatisch in aanmerking voor een Academy Award in 2023.

Afgelopen week won de film, voorafgaand aan het Human Rights Watch Film Festival in Londen, al de eerste Tony Elliott Impact Award van Time Out.

Uit het juryrapport bij de Berlinale Documentary Award (40.000 euro): “We award the Documentary Film Prize to a film that reveals the truth about the military regime’s use of cold-blooded brutality against its people. Courageous citizens recorded the events, a collective of anonymous filmmakers produced the film at a secret location. Despite the relentless depiction of violence, this superb film develops its own artistic poetry. The images and sounds of this tragedy inevitably burn themselves into our minds. With great respect for the work on Myanmar Diaries, we congratulate the whole collective.”

Uit het juryrapport van de Amnesty International Film Award (5.000 euro): “Myanmar Diaries is an impressively investigative and deeply courageous film. All those involved who risked their lives to produce this film are courageous, as are the people who are portrayed in this film and who oppose the military regime in Myanmar.”

Motivering bij de Tony Elliott Impact Award: “A remarkable piece of guerrilla filmmaking that was shot in secret by an anonymous filmmaking collective, charting the country’s 2021 coup by a military junta in visceral detail.”

Myanmar Diaries is opgebouwd uit korte films van tien jonge, anonieme Birmese filmmakers en burgerjournalistieke beelden die de brutaliteit van de junta en het moedige verzet vastleggen. De film laat de ontwikkeling zien in het afgelopen jaar vanaf de militaire staatsgreep op 1 februari 2021. Na landelijke protesten en burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid en gewelddadige repressie waarbij duizenden vreedzame demonstranten werden opgesloten is er nu een groeiend gewapend verzet tegen de junta. Organisch beweegt de film heen en weer tussen documentaire en fictie en vormt zo een naadloos geheel waarin de filmmakers creatieve manieren vinden om hun hoofdrolspelers anoniem te houden.

Myanmar Diaries is een uiterst urgente film in een tijd waarin Myanmar wereldwijd bijna uit het nieuws is verdwenen.

Myanmar Diaries is vanaf 12 mei in Nederland in de filmtheaters te zien.
